Forum alleges plot to force Amaechi out

Forum alleges plot to force Amaechi out

THERE are fresh allegations of a plot to remove Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
The plan is to force him to resign, the Rivers Peoples Forum, a socio-political group claimed yesterday.
The Nation got no independent confirmation of the “plan” last night.
The RPF, in a statement signed by its President, Charles Bekwele, gave details of the plot, which it sees as part of the dispute including the Governor, his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Presidency.
The statement reads: “This fresh plot to illegally remove Governor Amaechi from office is another desperate move by the Abuja cabal that is so desperate to remove the governor from office by ‘all means possible’. This Abuja cabal has hatched a four-part sinister plot that is planned to end with the governor being blackmailed and threatened to resign from office.”
“Incontrovertible information at our disposal indicates that the Abuja cabal working with some expired politicians in the State has plan to execute this plot within three weeks. The hatchet man of the expired politicians is a former Rivers State legislator who was recently involved in the failed plot to remove the State Speaker Otelemaba Amachree, which led to the fracas in the state Assembly. The said former legislator lobbied the state legislators with promises of huge sums of money to impeach the Speaker.”
The RPF went on: “The plot would involve seizing Governor Amaechi in connivance with security agents, then forcing and blackmailing him to resign. Something like what happened to former Governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige. This threat and blackmail may involve the use of members of his nuclear family, if the need arises. The whole operation they plan would be done within three hours and within that time frame the governor would be held incommunicado from the rest of the world until he resigns and record for the electronic media his resignation speech.”
“The statement said Amaechi would, going by the plot, be replaced by another man from his ethnic group, Ikwerre, unti the 2015 election.
The people, RPF stressed, will reject the plot because “Amaechi was given a mandate by Rivers people to be their governor until May 29, 2015”. “Any attempt to truncate this collective mandate of Rivers people will be firmly resisted by Rivers people. We will not allow any individual or cabal to truncate our collective mandate given to Governor Amaechi. They must henceforth desist from such insidious plots that will certainly throw our polity into disarray and threaten our democracy. This reckless impunity must stop,” it said.
The fracas broke out in House of Assembly on July 9 and 10.
Five members of the 32-member House attempted to hold a meeting believed to be programmed to suspend the leadership to pave the way for the removal of Amaechi.
The five members said they impeached Speaker Otelemaba Dan Amacree and installed Evans Bipi as Speaker .
Bipi and other four members are loyal to Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike who is opposed to Amaechi.

Major Gideon Orkar Coup Speech In April 1990

Fellow Nigerian Citizens,

On behalf of the patriotic and well-meaning peoples of the Middle Belt and the southern parts of this country, I , Major Gideon Orkar, wish to happily inform you of the successful ousting of the dictatorial, corrupt, drug baronish, evil man, deceitful, homo-sexually-centered, prodigalistic, un-patriotic administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.

We have equally commenced their trials for unabated corruption, mismanagement of national economy, the murders of Dele Giwa, Major-General Mamman Vasta, with other officers as there was no attempted coup but mere intentions that were yet to materialize and other human rights violations.

The National Guard already in its formative stage is disbanded with immediate effect. Decrees Number 2 and 46 are hereby abrogated. We wish to emphasize that this is not just another coup but a well-conceived, planned and executed revolution for the marginalized, oppressed and enslaved peoples of the Middle Belt and the south with a view to freeing ourselves and children yet unborn from eternal slavery and colonization by a clique of this country.

Our history is replete with numerous and uncontrollable instances of callous and insensitive dominatory repressive intrigues by those who think it is their birthright to dominate till eternity the political and economic privileges of this great country to the exclusion of the people of the Middle Belt and the south.

They have almost succeeded in subjugating the Middle Belt and making them voiceless and now extending same to the south.

It is our unflinching belief that this quest for domination, oppression and marginalization is against the wish of God and therefore, must be resisted with the vehemence.

Anything that has a beginning must have an end. It will also suffice here to state that all Nigerians without skeleton in their cupboards need not to be afraid of this change. However, those with skeleton in their cupboards have all reasons to fear, because the time of reckoning has come.

For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state the three primary reasons why we have decided to oust the satanic Babangida administration. The reasons are as follows:

(a) To stop Babangida’s desire to cunningly, install himself as Nigeria’s life president at all costs and by so doing, slowpoke the progress of this country for life. In order to be able to achieve this undesirable goals of his, he has evidently started destroying those groups and sections he perceived as being able to question his desires.

Examples of groups already neutralized, pitched against one another or completely destroyed are:

(1) The Sokoto caliphate by installing an unwanted Sultan to cause division within the hitherto strong Sokoto caliphate.

(2) The destruction of the peoples of Plateau State, especially the Lantang people, as a balancing force in the body politics of this country.

(3) The buying of the press by generous monetary favors and the usage of State Security Service, SSS, as a tool of terror.

(4) The intent to cow the students by the promulgation of the draconian decree Number 47.

(5) The cowing of the university teaching and non-teaching staff by an intended massive purge, using the 150 million dollar loan as the necessitating factor.

(6) Deliberately withholding funds to the armed forces to make them ineffective and also crowning his diabolical scheme through the intended retrenchment of more than half of the members of the armed forces.

Other pointers that give credence to his desire to become a life president against the wishes of the people are:

(1) His appointment of himself as a minister of defense, his putting under his direct control the SSS, his deliberate manipulation of the transition programme, his introduction of inconceivable, unrealistic and impossible political options, his recent fraternization with other African leaders that have installed themselves as life presidents and his dogged determination to create a secret force called the national guard, independent of the armed forces and the police which will be answerable to himself alone, both operationally and administratively.

It is our strong view that this kind of dictatorial desire of Babangida is unacceptable to Nigerians of the 1990’s, and, therefore, must be resisted by all.

Another major reason for the change is the need to stop intrigues, domination and internal colonization of the Nigerian state by the so-called chosen few. This, in our view, has been and is still responsible for 90 percent of the problems of Nigerians.

This indeed has been the major clog in our wheel of progress.

This clique has an unabated penchant for domination and unrivalled fostering of mediocrity and outright detest for accountability, all put together have been our undoing as a nation.

This will ever remain our threat if not checked immediately. It is strongly believed that without the intrigues perpetrated by this clique and misrule, Nigeria will have in all ways achieved developmental virtues comparable to those in Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, India, and even Japan.

Evidence, therefore, this cancerous dominance has as a factor constituted by a major and unpardonable clog in the wheel of progress of the Nigerian state. It is suffice to mention a few distasteful intrigues engineered by this group of Nigerians in recent past. These are:

(1) The shabby and dishonorable treatment meted on the longest serving Nigerian general in the person of General Domkat Bali, who in actual fact had given credibility to the Babangida administration.

(2) The wholesale hijacking of Babangida’s administration by the all-powerful clique.

(3) The disgraceful and inexplicable removal of Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, Professor Tam David-West, Mr. Aret Adams and so on from office.

(4) The now-pervasive and on-going retrenchment of Middle Belt and southerners from public offices and their instant replacement by the favoured class and their stooges.

(5) The deliberate disruption of the educational culture and retarding its place to suit the favoured class to the detriment of other educational minded parts of this country.

(6) The deliberate impoverishment of the peoples from the Middle Belt and the south, making them working ghosts and feeding on the formulae of 0-1-1- or 0-0-0 while the aristocratic class and their stooges are living in absolute affluence on a daily basis without working for it.

(7) Other countless examples of the exploitative, oppressive, dirty games of intrigues of its class, where people and stooges that can best be described by the fact that even though they contribute very little economically to the well-being of Nigeria, they have over the years served and presided over the supposedly national wealth derived in the main from the Middle Belt and the southern part of this country, while the people from these parts of the country have been completely deprived from benefiting from the resources given to them by God.

(cool The third reason for the change is the need to lay a strong egalitarian foundation for the real democratic take off of the Nigerian state or states as they circumstances may dictate.

In the light of all the above and in recognition of the negativeness of the aforementioned aristocratic factor, the overall progress of the Nigerian state a temporary decision to excise the following states namely, Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, Kano and Bauchi states from the Federal Republic of Nigeria comes into effect immediately until the following conditions are met.

The conditions to be met to necessitate the re-absorption of the aforementioned states are as following:

(a) To install the rightful heir to the Sultanate, Alhaji Maccido, who is the people’s choice.

(b) To send a delegation led by the real and recognized Sultan Alhaji Maccido to the federal government to vouch that the feudalistic and aristocratic quest for domination and operation will be a thing of the past and will never be practiced in any part of the Nigeria state.

By the same token, all citizens of the five states already mentioned are temporarily suspended from all public and private offices in Middle Belt and southern parts of this country until the mentioned conditions above are met.

They are also required to move back to their various states within one week from today. They will, however, be allowed to return and joint the Federal Republic of Nigeria when the stipulated conditions are met.

In the same vein, all citizens of the Middle Belt and the south are required to come back to their various states pending when the so-called all-in-all Nigerians meet the conditions that will ensure a united Nigeria. A word is enough for the wise.

This exercise will not be complete without purging corrupt public officials and recovering their ill-gotten wealth, since the days of the oil boom till date. Even in these hard times, when Nigerians are dying from hunger, trekking many miles to work for lack of transportation, a few other Nigerians with complete impunity are living in unbelievable affluence both inside and outside the country.

We are extremely determined to recover all ill-gotten wealth back to the public treasury for the use of the masses of our people. You are all advised to remain calm as there is no cause for alarm. We are fully in control of the situation as directed by God. All airports, seaports and borders are closed forthwith.

The former Armed Forces Ruling Council is now disbanded and replaced with National Ruling Council to be chaired by the head of state with other members being a civilian vice-head of state, service chiefs, inspector general of police, one representative each from NLC, NUJ, NBA, and NANS.

A curfew is hereby imposed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. All members of the armed forces and the police forces are hereby confined to their respective barracks.

All unlawful and criminal acts by those attempting to cause chaos will be ruthlessly crushed. Be warned as we are prepared at all costs to defend the new order.

All radio stations are hereby advised to hook on permanently to the national network programme until further notice.

Long live all true patriots of this great country of ours. May God and Allah through his bountiful mercies bless us all".

Same here. I was a kid then, but I could remember vividly all that happened then, and i was fortunate or should i say unfortunate to be in a military barrack then. We saw first hand all the intrigues, counter coup and power play that took place after Orkar's announcement. After the coup failed or look like it was gonna fail, we started seeing so many J5 buses abadoned inside and outside the barracks. A lot of military guys that partook in the coup were abandoning their military gears for civilian clothing. I happen to know a military family friend that partook in the coup ( Major Mukoro), he was later killed along with so many junior officers. It was a sad day for those brilliant young officers, and also a sad day for Nigeria.

I think the coup failed, cuz of those 5 northern state that Orkar mentioned in his broadcast. We remembered in the initial stage, it had popular support even within military, but all of sudden everything started collapsing. We heard Abacha has retaking the Bonny camp barracks, Doddan barracks and there was one Major Biu who took the ikeja cantonments and 242 recci battalion from the coup plotters.

Had it been successful, maybe Nigeria would have been a better Nation today. Look at 23 yrs after the failed coup, Nigeria is still deep in corruption, nepotism, lots of dishonesty, get-rich-quick syndrome, space age kleptomania, parochial tribalism/sectionalism, 'me first' syndrome, indiscipline everywhere.

In the name of the Supreme Council of the Revolution of the Nigerian Armed Forces, I declare martial law over the Northern Provinces of Nigeria. The Constitution is suspended and the regional government and elected assemblies are hereby dissolved. All political, cultural, tribal and trade union activities, together with all demonstrations and unauthorised gatherings, excluding religious worship, are banned until further notice.
The aim of the Revolutionary Council is to establish a strong united and prosperous nation, free from corruption and internal strife. Our method of achieving this is strictly military but we have no doubt that every Nigerian will give us maximum cooperation by assisting the regime and not disturbing the peace during the slight changes that are taking place. I am to assure all foreigners living and working in this part of Nigeria that their rights will continue to be respected. All treaty obligations previously entered into with any foreign nation will be respected and we hope that such nations will respect our country’s territorial integrity and will avoid taking sides with enemies of the revolution and enemies of the people.
My dear countrymen, you will hear, and probably see a lot being done by certain bodies charged by the Supreme Council with the duties of national integration, supreme justice, general security and property recovery. As an interim measure all permanent secretaries, corporation chairmen and senior heads of departments are allowed to make decisions until the new organs are functioning, so long as such decisions are not contrary to the aims and wishes of the Supreme Council. No Minister or Parliamentary Secretary possesses administrative or other forms of control over any Ministry, even if they are not considered too dangerous to be arrested.
This is not a time for long speech-making and so let me acquaint you with ten proclamations in the Extraordinary Orders of the Day which the Supreme Council has promulgated. These will be modified as the situation improves.
You are hereby warned that looting, arson, homosexuality, rape, embezzlement, bribery or corruption, obstruction of the revolution, sabotage, subversion, false alarms and assistance to foreign invaders, are all offences punishable by death sentence. Demonstrations and unauthorised assembly, non-cooperation with revolutionary troops are punishable in grave manner up to death. Refusal or neglect to perform normal duties or any task that may of necessity be ordered by local military commanders in support of the change will be punishable by a sentence imposed by the local military commander. Spying, harmful or injurious publications, and broadcasts of troop movements or actions, will be punished by any suitable sentence deemed fit by the local military commander. Shouting of slogans, loitering and rowdy behavior will be rectified by any sentence of incarceration, or any more severe punishment deemed fit by the local military commander. Doubtful loyalty will be penalised by imprisonment or any more severe sentence. Illegal possession or carrying of firearms, smuggling or trying to escape with documents, valuables, including money or other assets vital to the running of any establishment will be punished by death sentence. Wavering or sitting on the fence and failing to declare open loyalty with the revolution will be regarded as an act of hostility punishable by any sentence deemed suitable by the local military commander. Tearing down an order of the day or proclamation or other authorized notices will be penalised by death.
This is the end of the Extraordinary Order of the Day which you will soon begin to see displayed in public. My dear countrymen, no citizen should have anything to fear, so long as that citizen is law abiding and if that citizen has religiously obeyed the native laws of the country and those set down in every heart and conscience since 1st October, 1960.
Our enemies are the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places that seek bribes and demand 10 percent; those that seek to keep the country divided permanently so that they can remain in office as ministers or VIPs at least, the tribalists, the nepotists, those that make the country look big for nothing before international circles, those that have corrupted our society and put the Nigerian political calendar back by their words and deeds.
Like good soldiers we are not promising anything miraculous or spectacular. But what we do promise every law abiding citizen is freedom from fear and all forms of oppression, freedom from general inefficiency and freedom to live and strive in every field of human endeavour, both nationally and internationally. We promise that you will no more be ashamed to say that you are a Nigerian.
I leave you with a message of good wishes and ask for your support at all times, so that our land, watered by the Niger and Benue, between the sandy wastes and gulf of guinea, washed in salt by the mighty Atlantic, shall not detract Nigeria from gaining sway in any great aspect of international endeavour. My dear countrymen, this is the end of this speech. I wish you all good luck and I hope you will cooperate to the fullest in this job which we have set for ourselves of establishing a prosperous nation and achieving solidarity.

Maiden Speech of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari. January 1, 1984.

 buhari1.jpg

In pursuance of the primary objective of saving our great nation from total collapse, I, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari of the Nigerian army have, after due consultation amongst the services of the armed forces, been formally invested with the authority of the Head of the Federal Military Government and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is with humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept this challenge and call to national duty.
As you must have heard in the previous announcement, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1979) has been suspended, except those sections of it which are exempted in the constitution. The change became necessary in order to put an end to the serious economic predicament and the crisis of confidence now afflicting our nation. Consequently, the Nigerian armed forces have constituted themselves into a Federal Military Government comprising of a Supreme Military Council, a National Council of States, a Federal Executive Council at the centre and State Executive Councils to be presided over by military governors in each of the states of the federation. Members of these councils will be announced soon. The last Federal Military Government drew up a programme with the aim of handing over political power to the civilians in 1979. This programme as you all know, was implemented to the letter. The 1979 constitution was promulgated. However, little did the military realise that the political leadership of the second republic will circumvent most of the checks and balances in the constitution and bring the present state of general insecurity. The premium on political power became so exceedingly high that political contestants regarded victory at elections as a matter of life and death struggle and were determined to capture or retain power by all means.
It is true that there is a worldwide economic recession. However, in the case of Nigeria, its impact was aggravated by mismanagement. We believe the appropriate government agencies have good advice but the leadership disregarded their advice. The situation could have been avoided if the legislators were alive to their constitutional responsibilities; Instead, the legislators were preoccupied with determining their salary scales, fringe benefit and unnecessary foreign travels, et al, which took no account of the state of the economy and the welfare of the people they represented. As a result of our inability to cultivate financial discipline and prudent management of the economy, we have come to depend largely on internal and external borrowing to execute government projects with attendant domestic pressure and soaring external debts, thus aggravating the propensity of the outgoing civilian administration to mismanage our financial resources. Nigeria was already condemned perpetually with the twin problem of heavy budget deficits and weak balance of payments position, with the prospect of building a virile and viable economy.
The last general election was anything but free and fair. The only political parties that could complain of election rigging are those parties that lacked the resources to rig. There is ample evidence that rigging and thuggery were relative to the resources available to the parties. This conclusively proved to us that the parties have not developed confidence in the presidential system of government on which the nation invested so much material and human resources. While corruption and indiscipline have been associated with our state of under-development, these two evils in our body politic have attained unprecedented height in the past few years. The corrupt, inept and insensitive leadership in the last four years has been the source of immorality and impropriety in our society. Since what happens in any society is largely a reflection of the leadership of that society, we deplore corruption in all its facets. This government will not tolerate kick-backs, inflation of contracts and over-invoicing of imports etc. Nor will it condone forgery, fraud, embezzlement, misuse and abuse of office and illegal dealings in foreign exchange and smuggling.
Arson has been used to cover up fraudulent acts in public institutions. I am referring to the fire incidents that gutted the P&T buildings in Lagos, the Anambra State Broadcasting Corporation, the Republic Building at Marina, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Capital Development Authority Accounts at Abuja and the NET Building. Most of these fire incidents occurred at a time when Nigerians were being apprehensive of the frequency of fraud scandals and the government incapacity to deal with them. Corruption has become so pervasive and intractable that a whole ministry has been created to stem it. Fellow Nigerians, this indeed is the moment of truth. My colleagues and I – the Supreme Military Council, must be frank enough to acknowledge the fact that at the moment, an accurate picture of the financial position is yet to be determined. We have no doubt that the situation is bad enough. In spite of all this, every effort will be made to ensure that the difficult and degrading conditions under which we are living are eliminated. Let no one however be deceived that workers who have not received their salaries in the past eight or so months will receive such salaries within today or tomorrow or that hospitals which have been without drugs for months will be provided with enough immediately. We are determined that with the help of God we shall do our best to settle genuine payments to which government is committed, including backlog of workers’ salaries after scrutiny. We are confident and we assure you that even in the face of the global recession, and the seemingly gloomy financial future, given prudent management of Nigeria’s existing financial resources and our determination to substantially reduce and eventually nail down rises in budgetary deficits and weak balance of payments position. The Federal Military Government will reappraise policies with a view to paying greater attention to the following areas:
  • The economy will be given a new impetus and better sense of direction.
  • Corrupt officials and their agents will be brought to book.
  • In view of the drought that affected most parts of the country, the federal government will, with the available resources, import food stuffs to supplement the shortfalls suffered in the last harvest.
Our foreign policy will both be dynamic and realistic. Africa will of course continue to be the centre piece of our foreign policy. The morale and combat readiness of the armed forces will be given high priority. Officers and men with high personal and professional integrity will have nothing to fear.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria and all other holders of judiciary appointments within the federation can continue in their appointments and the judiciary shall continue to function under existing laws subject to such exceptions as may e decreed from time to time by the Federal Military Government. All holders of appointments in the civil service, the police and the National Security Organisation shall continue to exercise their functions in the normal way subject to changes that may be introduced by the Federal Military Government. All those chairmen and members of statutory corporations, parastatals and other executive departments are hereby relieved of their appointments with immediate effect.
The Federal Military Government will maintain and strengthen existing diplomatic relations with other states and with international organisations and institutions such as the Organisation of African Unity, the United Nations and its organs, Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, ECOWAS and the Commonwealth etc. The Federal Military Government will honour and respect all treaties and obligations entered into by the previous government and we hope that such nations and bodies will reciprocate this gesture by respecting our country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Fellow Nigerians, finally, we have dutifully intervened to save this nation from imminent collapse. We therefore expect all Nigerians, including those who participated directly or indirectly in bringing the nation to this present predicament, to cooperate with us. This generation of Nigerians, and indeed future generations, have no country other than Nigeria. We shall remain here and salvage it together.
May God bless us all. Good morning.

Lao Airlines pilot told to change course : PP Post

Lao Airlines pilot told to change course : PP Post
A Lao official retrieves window part of Lao Airlines aircraft at a plane crashed site in Mekong River, Pakse, the capital of Champasak province, Laos,

A Lao Airlines pilot was told to change course shortly before his turbo-prop plane slammed into the murky Mekong River in southern Laos, killing all 49 people on board, including five Thais nationals on Wednesday.

Phnom Penh Post reported today the control tower at the Pakse airport had issued the instruction to 56-year-old Cambodian-born pilot Young San as the plane was approaching to land in extreme weather.

"During strong winds, the air controller told [Young San] to change course," said Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation Mak Sam Ol, who has been briefed on the cause of the crash by Lao authorities.

"He followed instructions but the plane faced strong winds and it couldn’t get through," Mr Mak Sam Ol told the Phnom Penh Post.

Young San, who had more than 30 years flying experience, had worked for the airline for almost three years, the Post said.

"He had a contract with Laos's aviation [authority] for three years and had been there almost all that time," he said.

He was a former pilot with Cambodia’s defunct state carrier Royal Air Cambodge after having trained in Russia and later France.

British police raid during scam Nigerian wedding

The British Home Office immigration officers have swooped on a scam wedding ceremony organised by a Nigerian man and a Portuguese lady, which was held at a registry office in Harrow, North London.
The man, 32, has now been sent back to Nigeria, and the woman, 22, is on bail until November 7. UK immigration officers said the woman may have married for cash on three separate occasions, Sky News reported yesterday.
Police interrupted the marriage in front of guests and took the bride and groom for questioning separately. It emerged that they knew little about each other and that the man was working in the UK illegally.
Harrow Council leader Susan Hall said: ‘It is appalling to see the lengths some people go to in dressing up and organizing guests for a sham marriage. “A marriage is supposed to be the happiest day in your life.
Well, in this case, the couple certainly got a day they won’t forget.” It is reported that up to one in five marriages conducted in civil ceremonies in parts of UK may be bogus, one of Britain’s most senior registrars has warned.
In an interview with Sky News, Mark Rimmer, the chairman of the Local Registration Services Association, said 20% of weddings in urban areas were suspicious – the worst it has ever been. Home Office figures show the number of reported cases has tripled in the last three years to 1,800.
But Rimmer said the number of sham marriages – which were likely an attempt to gain residence in the UK – reported to the authorities was “the tip of the iceberg” and that official figures are a “drop in the ocean” compared with the full scale of the problem.
He said the issue is now worse than in 2004 when the first legislation to combat the phenomenon was introduced and that registrars have to conduct ceremonies they suspect to be bogus “through gritted teeth”.
“We have seen huge increases in potential sham marriages presenting themselves to us, we now have more reports from registrars going to the Home Office, but I think that is the tip of a very large iceberg, and effectively the real scale of the problem is far greater than that that is reported to the Home Office officially.
“Most registration officers are not immigration officers, they came into this business to facilitate marriage. So therefore they don’t want to be cynical.
“Unfortunately therefore what happens is the ones that are absolutely blatant get reported and there are some that are borderline that slip through without being reported – and that is the iceberg under the water and that’s huge – it is absolutely huge.
Rimmer suggested that overall 15,000 of the 173,000 civil weddings that take place each year in England and Wales could be bogus – almost 10 times the official level.

Jubilation in Parts of Northern Nigeria as Population Commission Boss is Sacked

ODIMEGWUThere was jubilation in parts of northern Nigeria today as President Goodluck Jonathan bowed to pressure from a section of northern Nigeria politicians and relieved the Chairman of the country’s National Population Commission, Mr Festus Odimegwu of his position. The president appointed Sam Ahaiwe, the Commissioner representing Abia State in the Commission, to act as chairman pending the appointment of a new chairman of the commission.
Observers were not surprised at the abrupt removal of Odumegwu who at a public function had said: “No census has been credible in Nigeria since 1816. Even the one conducted in 2006 is not credible. I have the records and evidence produced by scholars and professors of repute; this is not my report. If the current laws are not amended, the planned 2016 census will not succeed”.
Sequel to that indicting statement, which echoed the views of many experts, northern Nigeria politicians and governors led by Rabiu Kwankwaso undertook a virulent lobby which urged Jonathan to drop Odimegwu. They noted that Odimegwu’s blunt statement was capable of destabilizing the country.
Kwankwaso is the current governor of Kano state which has benefitted the most from the same fraudulent population figures that Odimegwu complained about.
Following his visit to President Jonathan after the vexed Odumegwu statement, Kwankwaso offered the following statement to the media and making a snide reference to Odimegwu’s past as boss of Nigeria Breweries PLC: “…I also raised the issue of the Chairman of the National Population Commission headed by one Festus Odimegwu. We are not happy about that appointment, and think that it was a mistake. He had only one thing in alcoholic industry (sic), all his life. And my guess is that he’s taking a lot of his products and that is why we feel that his appointment is a mistake because he cannot be the Chairman of NPC and at the same time attack what his predecessors have done”.
Although international agencies recognise Lagos as hosting an estimated 15 million people, making it one of the most populated metropolis in the world, Nigeria’s last census exercise which was fraught with fraud as Odimegwu opined, ascribes the largest population to Kwankwaso’s Kano State instead of Lagos.
Africanewscircle learnt that President Jonathan had persuaded Odimegwu to tender the resignation which he accepted today (Thursday).

GEJ? Yes, but What About the Rest of Us?-----Imo Ben Ubokudom Eshiet

Prof. Imo Eshiet

When I was a child, my mother was fond of saying evil men were very much part of creation. In other words, God uses wicked people to punish the wicked. I believe she was right for no good people would do evil. Let's extend the metaphor. Nigeria is decidedly a seething seismic and churning cesspool. Put simply the place stinks much like the frothing and unsightly open gutters so commonplace in the nation. And inevitably governments at all levels in the nation suck.

Everyone lashes out viciously at GEJ conveniently forgetting local government chairmen, legislators and assembly men and women who all make up the government. Sure enough a fish begins to rot from its head but the fish is a system and so the rot and dysfunction like a disease that afflicts a baby cannot spare the baby sitter. GEJ is often lampooned as clueless but what about the rest of us who watch helplessly as elections are rigged under our noses? What about those who scheme and collude for appointments into governments we know are worse than unkempt latrines?

Where can we find sanity in the country? Is it in churches where the clergy rat and prey on the poor and gullible members to whom they sell prophecies of unmerited uplift? Is it in the markets where scales are tilted to cheat or gas stations where meters are adjusted to brazenly steal from customers or in schools where grades are for the highest bidders? Is it in courts where justice is openly traded and battered?
In offices, post office, airports and seaports, everywhere the rot is ever present. Anyone one even an amateur terrorist can carry any explosive device through any airport in Nigeria. Ask Abdul cooling his upscale but burnt heels in a US prison.

When last did anyone stop to ask how someone who just yesterday walked around in stinking rags but suddenly, all too suddenly started driving armored limos next day?
Yes Jonathan is our dump man but we are certainly the lavatory he dumps. The North that retails and exports terror now because GEJ is in power easily forgets it has been in power for over 40 odd years with nothing but a legion of almajiris to show for it.

And now a line about the National Conference. We are as usual very hasty to condemn the initiative. If at the end GEJ achieves nothing but at least makes the center less attractive especially to those who bring nothing but greed and rancor to the table, he would have indeed succeeded tremendously. It sucks to see a Niger state governor or any of those career abeg- bring- make- we- chop governors opening their beggarly leprous mouths and throwing bombs and tantrums and forgetting that they were the very ones who brought the nation to its present crippled condition.

It said while it would prefer to dialogue with the aggrieved members to resolve any outstanding issues, it recognised that there was no compulsion in political party membership.
The party was reacting to a threat by some of the governors to defect to the opposition All Progressives Congress if the crisis within the party persisted.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent over the telephone that the party was a democratic institution made up of individuals who chose to be members on their own free will.
He said, “We want them to remain in the party. We will want to work with them and resolve our issues; but we are in a democracy and in a democracy membership of a party is a choice freely made.”
Metuh however declined further comments when asked to speak on the state of the peace process which was suspended on October 7, 2013.
Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako had on Wednesday hinted that he and his six other aggrieved colleagues might defect to the rival APC unless the Tukur-led executive of the party changed its ways.
He told a delegation of APC stalwarts who paid him a courtesy visit in his residence that he admired the party’s structure and the focus of governors under its platform.
Nyako was quoted by his Director of Press, Ahmad Sajo, as saying he abhorred the injustice and impunity that were going on in the PDP.
The governor said, “These are the reasons (injustice and impunity) why we may have to dump the PDP, if they will not change their ways.
“We may definitely be pushed to the warm embrace of the APC because there is so much injustice in the PDP. “
The seven aggrieved governors of the PDP are: Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano); Rotimi Ameachi (Rivers); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).

Nine arrested over killing of university drop-out

Nine arrested over killing of university drop-out
The Benue State Police Command has arrested nine persons in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old university drop-out at the Kan  shio area of Makurdi last Tuesday.
The victim, Terngu Uma, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ezeala, was allegedly hacked down at a drinking joint at about 10 pm by suspected cultists.
He explained that the corpse of the victim has been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Apir, while investigation into the killing was also ongoing.
Also, the PPRO disclosed that three persons were arrested for torching some houses in Mbaivende village in Ushongo Local Government area of the state.
Ezeala told Daily Sun that last Wednesday, at about 8:30 pm, three huts belonging to one Ikyobo Toribi, were allegedly set ablaze by the suspects simply identified as Chia, Lazarus and Ashwe.
He said that the matter was under investigation, adding that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.
In another development, the PPRO said 12 persons were arrested during the Sallah celebration for contravening the 8pm motorcycle movement restriction in the state.
Ezeala, who also said 17 motorcycles were impounded during the period stated that the arrested persons would be charged to court after investigation.

APC Slams FG For Mounting Pressure On ASUU To End Strike Through Deception

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as a cheap and ludicrous strategy the decision by the Federal Government to use market women, religious leaders and students to put pressure on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike without resolving the issues that caused the strike in the first instance.
Lai_Muhammed
National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the strike, which is now in its fourth month, would have ended by now if the Federal Government had pursued its negotiations with ASUU with half the energy it had been using to rally various groups to protest against the union.
It described as particularly ridiculous the crowd-for-hire protest in Abuja on Monday by the so-called National Market Women Association, in which their leader vowed to chase lecturers out of Nigeria and replace them with ”jobless Nigerians’.’
”This infantile statement by the leader of the apparently misguided market women is the most irresponsible statement that anyone has made on the long-drawn ASUU strike, and it is a shame that the government is the instigator of such nonsense.
”While indeed there are millions of jobless Nigerians, is it just any jobless Nigerian who can be a university teacher? How does President Goodluck Jonathan, himself a former university teacher, feel about those apparently hired by his administration treating university teachers with so much disrespect? Even if the government succeeds in forcing the lecturers back to the classroom, can it force them to teach effectively?
”Why are these groups, including students who have sold their souls to the devil, not mounting the same pressure on the Federal Government to intensify its efforts to end the strike? Why didn’t these groups protest when the First Lady embarked on a junket to receive a spurious award even as Nigerian public universities remain shut? After all, a government that said it will go broke if it honours its agreement with ASUU had no compunction shelling out huge tax payers money to fund the First Lady’s jamboree to South Korea,” APC said.
The party reminded those who are blaming ASUU for the strike that all that the teachers were demanding were better infrastructure for the universities, a favourable condition for teaching and research as well as an enhanced pay that will stem the tide of brain drain, which has left the country’s public tertiary institutions struggling to get high-quality faculties.
”How are these demands anti-students, as some thoughtless students and misled market women have alleged?” it queried.
APC reiterated its earlier call on the FG to respect the agreement it signed with ASUU, saying if the government would cut waste, adequately tackle corruption and show more prudence, there would be more than enough resources to spend on the education of the nation’s youth, without which there will be no development.
The party asked President Goodluck Jonathan to tender an unreserved apology to ASUU for the antics of his administration in using public funds to induce fake and easy-to-manipulate individuals and groups to launch scurrilous attacks on the striking teachers.

The trial judge, Justice Latam Nyordee, rejected the bail applications of the remaining eight  accused persons due to the capital nature of their offences.

Advocates of sovereign confab are critics of 1914 amalgamation – Yahaya Mahmood

Senior Advocate of Nigeria in Kaduna State, Yahaya Mahmood, has said that those calling for a sovereign national conference are critics of the 1914 amalgamation.
Mahmood, in an interview yesterday said: “Those calling for a sovereign national conference are people who believe that the 1914 amalgamation was forced on us, and we should go our separate ways. They forget so many things including the civil war and so many conferences we have had. They forget that military men are also Nigerians”.
He added: “The president has inaugurated a 13-man panel to come up with details of the conference. What should be the name? How are those attending or participating going to be elected or selected? Will it be based on ethnic nationalities or local governments or constituencies? Remember that the president will receive the report, accept all or part of it and send it to the National Assembly. Now will the National Assembly suspend its constitutional amendment process until after the conference?”.
Mahmood, who said the conference will not likely bring about any desired change, noted that all Nigeria needs is good and selfless leaders and advisers. He said that Nigeria also needs a re-think on how to operate the 1999 constitution.
“Why do Nigerians spend billions of naira on medical and education of their children abroad? Can’t we fix our hospitals and schools? Must we still sell crude and import refined fuel? We can use the constitution better by being more national, patriotic and sincere,” he stated.

Strike: Labour unions over stressing their actions – Abdulsalami

Strike: Labour unions over stressing their actions – AbdulsalamiFormer head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), on Friday took a cursory look at the incessant industrial actions crippling the country and accused striking labour unions of unnecessarily over stressing their actions.
He also advised the Federal Government to meet the legitimate demands of the unions.
Abdulsalami spoke he paid a Sallah visit to the Niger State governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu at his residence in Minna.
He was accompaigned on the visit by the former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) and some elders in the state.
He said the government and the unions must compromise their positions with the aim of resolving the disputes.
The former head of state said various actions embarked upon by the unions are affecting the masses.
“I believe strike is legitimate but I think we are overdoing it in this country. In developed countries, strike is done within 24 hours or at most two or three days to draw public and government attention to workers plight. Nigerians are affected by these actions. The government and these unions should look at how these issues can be resolved, “Abdulsalami stated.

Syrian intelligence chief killed

A senior Military Intelligence officer has been killed in eastern Syria, state media and activists say.
State television reported on Thursday that Gen. Jamaa Jamaa had died while “carrying out his national duties” and “pursuing terrorists” in Deir al-Zour.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said he was shot by a sniper during clashes between government and rebel forces in the city’s Rashdiya district.
Gen. Jamaa was close to President Bashar al-Assad, the United Kingdom-based group added.
BBC reports that he was commander of Syrian Military Intelligence’s headquarters in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, when former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated there in 2005.
Gen. Jamaa was questioned as part of a United Nations inquiry into the killing after the Syrian withdrawal. Damascus has always denied any involvement, although five members of the allied Lebanese Shia Islamist group Hezbollah have been indicted.
In 2006, the United States Treasury named Gen. Jamaa as a Specially Designated National, saying he had “significantly contributed to the Syrian government’s military and security presence in Lebanon.”
Al-Arabiya TV reported that at the time of his death Gen. Jamaa was head of Military Intelligence in Deir al-Zour province, and was one of the most powerful security officials in the country.
The Aisha bin al-Sadiq Brigade said one of its fighters had shot him.

Baby with four ears, no genital dies

A baby born in Makurdi on Thursday with four ear lobes and no genitals has died, a hospital official said.
The baby was delivered by Mrs. Mbanengen Emmanuel at about 5:30pm at Yima Hospital, located in International Market area, a suburb of Makurdi in Benue State.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. John Dzike, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday that the baby died “few hours after delivery.”
Dzike said the baby also had its intestines exposed at the lower part of the abdomen.
According to him, it is the second time a baby with such type of complications was delivered at the hospital this year.
He explained that the defect was caused by malformation during pregnancy.
“This is a case of congenital malformation. Some women use un-prescribed drugs during pregnancy, that is why it is very important to attend ante-natal clinics, especially in the first 12 weeks.
“Diseases like virus, chicken pox, and mumps which are viral, can cause congenital malformation,” Dzike explained.
He advised pregnant women to always attend ante-natal clinics and avoid self medication.
Efforts by NAN to speak with the mother of the baby proved abortive as she declined comment.

Saudi Arabia rejects UN Council seat offer

Saudi Arabia rejects UN Council seat offerThe United Nations Security Council is riddled with double standards and has failed the Middle East, Saudi Arabia said Friday as it rejected an offer to join the body.
In a statement published by the Saudi foreign ministry, the kingdom claimed that the council is incapable of keeping the peace internationally.
“To have the Palestinian cause remaining without a fair and permanent solution for 65 years, which resulted in several wars that threatened international peace and security, is evidence and proof of (the) Security Council’s inability to perform his duties and responsibilities,” CNN quoted the ministry as saying in the statement.
It also blamed the Security Council for not preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction in the region – especially nuclear weapons, a likely allusion to Saudi Arabia’s adversarial neighbor Iran.
Lastly, the kingdom brought up the civil war in Syria, blaming the UN for not punishing the government after a poison gas attack there killed hundreds of civilians.
Saudi Arabia backed the Syrian rebels and called for the overthrow of autocratic Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Jonathan’s Israel trip is spiritual not state visit – Commission

Jonathan’s Israel trip is spiritual not state visit – CommissionPresident Goodluck Jonathan pilgrimage to Israel is spiritual and not a state visit, the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, Mr. John-Kennedy Opara, has said.
Opara made the clarification at an interactive session with journalists on the president’s participation in the 2013 pilgrimage in Abuja on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the signing of a bilateral agreement on aviation with Israel has sparked a debate on the nature of Jonathan’s visit to Israel.
There is divided opinion as to whether it is a state visit or a spiritual journey for pilgrimage.
Opara said Jonathan’s visit to Israel would strictly be for pilgrimage, insisting that the visit would be different from the president’s usual state visits abroad.
He said the Israeli authorities might choose to accord the president the honour it usually gives to visiting Heads of State.
He said the president would only facilitate the signing of the agreement, all other arrangements had been put in place by officials from Ministries of Aviation and Foreign Affairs.
“It is not a state visit, he is going on a spiritual journey. However, a president is a president anywhere he goes to.
“The bilateral agreement that we are talking about will be concluded upon on the October 29 which is about his final activity in Israel.
“Of course, the Israeli authorities are aware of his coming and they will accord him that respect as a sitting president of Nigeria, that it is not a state visit,’’ Opara explained.

Proposed Sale Of Edo House: Gov Oshiomhole Explains Government’s Position

jonathanAmidst reactions by the opposition party to the proposed sale of Edo House, Lagos by the State Government, the Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhle during a media chat with top media Executives in his office, Wednesday, explained Government’s position on the issue.
Here is the excerpts:

First, let me use the opportunity of this meeting to brief you on a matter that I thought is actually self explainatory but considering the level of mischief in our environment; there are things you take for granted thinking that everybody understand, but there are people who either out of mischief or cheer ignorance seem to create confusion in the minds of the public.
We reviewed like we have done in every other aspect of our state; that we look at whenever we have asset, whether those assets are performing and the need to maintain the one that are performing and what we can do to make sure that all our investments, whether they are where we can put them back to work. Where we can’t, we sell them off so that private people can better utilize them.
Around the world, I think the days are gone when government claim to be able to control the commanding height of the economies of states or nations and everyone now agrees that government is better at providing infrastructures, providing the enabling environment for private people to go in.
Obviously, Edo State Government doesn’t have the competence to indulge or manage her estate. And from what we can see, where governments have such properties, it hardly ever makes money from it. It is the agents who are connected, who get appointed either as managing or as tenant or whatever end up benefiting from the asset. Now, having reviewed the whole situation, we ask ourselves whether or not for example we need the Edo Liaison Office in Lagos.
That office was built at a time when Lagos was still the capital of Nigeria and I believe every State Government, every regional government had a Liaison Office in Lagos. Some also use part of the Liaison Office as hostel, hotel or guest house where people or indigenes from the state are able to reside when they are posted to Lagos, they had a ready accommodation to stay. Edo House happen to be in a very prime area in Lagos. When the capital of Nigeria was relocated to Abuja, the status of Lagos changed. Lagos is still a very important city; but is now a commercial and industrial heartbeat of Nigeria. Is no longer the political headquarters. If you own a property in Lagos, you know that like every responsible government, Lagos State Government will expect that you pay rent. Every responsible government would change on property or the Land used, like we are trying to do in Edo State.
Now, since my assumption of office here, I have gone to Lagos with several of my commissioners at one time or the other. I have also gone there to assess the state of affairs in our Lagos Office and we were shocked to find the state of disrepair. The building has been abandoned for long with their lease with private individuals who use part of it as hotel. They don’t remit the money to government, you try to make them remit the money, they go to court. We are moving through one court to the other spending money on lawyers and so on.
Meanwhile, the property is there wasting away. I have to ask myself whether it makes economic sense or whether it will be in the interest of the good people of Edo State to continue to maintain that property and take Edo tax payers money to pay ground rent and other charges.
Just recently, we had a bill of about N60 million (Sixty Million Naira) from Lagos State Government for us to settle various charges associated with ownership of our property of that value in Lagos.
Now, the question that I have to ask myself is. Does it make sense for one to make money from Edo State to go and service our property in Lagos? If so, what do we get in return? Since being a Governor, I have never stay in the guest house in Edo Liaison Office in Lagos.
My predecessors never stay, there. Perhaps, the last time anybody stay there would be many, many years ago when one or two military Sole Administrator probably had cause to stay there. If I go to Lagos, I stay in a hotel and Edo State Government paid for that hotel.
So, what now is the value of retaining the property. It’s not yielding income for Edo State and is attracting charges.
We deliberated on this matter at the state executive council and we felt that the primary purpose or reason for acquiring that property in the first instance is no longer valid by reason of the fact that the capital has relocated to Abuja.
Consequently, we have built Edo House Office where we have staff and officials who liaise with Federal Agencies also handle protocol issues, when any of us is going to Lagos or anybody who have any enquiring to make in respect with what Edo State is doing.
So, we now have a building in Abuja, we also have a land we are going to develop, but the building in Lagos is therefore no longer relevant. We have decided to put it on sale. But when I got to know what the PDP government did before, we decided that the process was to be transparent and there is only one way to make the process transparent; get the necessary agents, advertise the fact that we want to sell the house. Rather than doing selective bidding, we opted for open advert so that whoever have the money to buy can buy. Our intention is; when we sell a property, whatever is realized can be use to build a property in Benin.
We have two outstanding viable projects if God willing and we saw in the time being available, and I intend to accomplish before the end of my tenure all the projects in Benin City. The most central one in my heart is building a Five Star Hotel with a Conference Centre and banquet facilities and seminar home in strategic place in Benin City because giving our location, gathering to the West, the East, North and to the South/South. Thirty minutes ride to Benin, 35 mins to Abuja, Benin City is simply the heart of the centre of Nigeria.
We must not forget that we are called the heart beat of Nigeria. The major weakness which we have why we can’t host major big events is the absence of banquet facilities or conference facilities among others.
So, I am convinced that with a 5 STAR HOTEL completed with such facilities, we can take advantage of our location and the fact that we have very good air link both to the industrial capital of Lagos and the political capital of Abuja and we enjoy three hours (3HRS) drive from Port-Harcourt and we are part of the oil producing states of the Niger/Delta and for me, it is about thinking of the future.
Now, having decided to put Edo House in an Open Market, whatever money we realized from it, makes more sense for Edo people to divest from Lagos and use the money and bring the investment down to Edo State and use it in terms of preference, or as a priority to build a 5 Star Hotel. Even if the money is not enough, it can be used to start the construction and find other resources to complete it or partner with the private sector. Incidentally, during my last visit to Washington, I had a discussion with the American Ambassador, Nelson Bar to fund the construction of a hotel in partnership and if that comes to past, we expect to raise and attract as far as $150 million (One Hundred and Fifty Million Dollars). If we get that, we can have 5 star marior hotel that will forever change and make a bold statement about our tourist potential as a state.
Therefore, we will rather relocate the house in Lagos to Benin. But if we can’t physically move it to Benin, we will put it in the market, bring the proceed to develop the city. My mandate is not to develop Lagos, my mandate is to develop Edo State and therefore, I have no apology for those who felt that barely for political reason, we keep our landed asset in Lagos to be wasting away. The responsibility of a Governor is to think not just about today but about the future.
Secondly, we have designs that are completed to build a Benin City Business District (B.C.B.D) and some of you may remember the Agidigbe House and the Bureau de-Exchange house around the King’s Square, the design is ready to have a very beautiful edifice around that King’s Square that would cover the Agidigbe and the Bureau de-exchange where the Comrade Buses are presently using as park. The Comrade buses have to be on the road moving. Now we want to build the Benin City Business District (B.C.B.D) and it will complete the statement we want to make around the King’s Square because you will recall at the beginning when they said we were just planting flowers but now they should know that we are not just planting flowers, we are constructing and we are building and I also said if you recall in our previous interaction that our vision is clear. By the time we are through, substantial part of our urban renewal programme in Benin City must have been completed.
When you stand at the King’s Square at night, it will be a beautiful site to behold. This is because you have the Sokponba Road already lighted, well built. Also, we have the Akpakpava Road which is already done.
We are working on Forestry Road and Mission Road. We have already completed the job on Oba Market Road, Airport Road has been completed and when all of these are lighted up and you are at the heart of Benin City, you could see a Modest City. Everything I have said we are working on, some have already been completed. I think the only two left now are the mission and Forestry Roads in which the only difficult part which is the construction of the side covet is almost completed. Once these are completed, the heart of Benin City will be such that every Edo person will be proud of and we will now find resources to build the Benin City Business District where you will have all kinds of facilities, office space, banks, hall; the design even have a space for cinema. Then, we have a city centre that truly works. So, for me, that is my challenge and if selling Lagos out will give us resources to transform Benin City, I will do so. The other day, I saw on the Television an advert where they claim that we said we are not bound to sell to the highest bidder and that means that we will not give in to them. There are standard format for advertising sale of property just like you have standard format for advertising contract. In the case of contract you might receive all files in courts that say we are not bound to award it to the highest bidder. But the fact that we advertised shown that we are more transparent, honest and more committed because the Previous P.D.P Government sold all kinds of property in the G.R.A.
Today, we don’t have any Guest House, you tell me, you have been in this state before me, tell me if any of those property were advertised. One of the PDP senators acquired a Land here that he paid less than a million Naira on a G.R.A Land. That case is not yet closed, we are still looking at it with a view to recovering it or sell it on its market value, if he can afford it, good. If he can’t afford it, it will be confisticated and put into public use. So they sold them underground. We advertised and they are making noise. Now if we as the bid revealed that we are not bound to sell to the highest bidder, then I am the Chief bidder. It is a standard format but we would rather want to be challenged if any of them comes out to buy and I’m believing the fact that they should have the money because they owned the cow and the head, let them bid. In any case, it should be shown that you are a serious bidder. You will be expected to attach 10% to the value of your bid to be sure that you are not just a busy-body bidder so that those who bid are people who are truly interested in buying the property.
However, I believe Edo people know better. We will try the best we can to protect the best interests of Edo State. Nobody in this government is entitled even to bid on that property not to talk of acquiring it. None of us is interested. So I ask you to monitor the process as transparently as you can, devout every time to carry out investigation. When we begin to receive biding. You find out how much it is sold and investigate who bought it.
I am sure you will have all the skills to discover what is on the paper and what is under the paper if there is anything under the paper. We are not being distracted, we are proceeding with the sales and we will use the money realized to develop this great city of Benin.

I Laugh At Dan Orbih

I laugh hysterically each time I see the funny nomenclature of Chief Dan Orbih, Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, constantly exhibiting his unpopular political gimmicks and sentiments on television, I am neither a politician nor a stooge of any political actor, but a true and concerned Edo indigene who believes in the development and overall upliftment of our great state.
In as much as we all have our individual rights to speak on issues of public concern as it were, we must learn not to abuse such rights either individually or collectively by misinforming and misleading the populace just to earn some cheap and ridiculous political points; because posterity will always have a way of paying us back. Being in the opposition in a state or country does not automatically make parties and individuals oppressors and hindrances to development all because they do not share similar ideologies with the government and political party in power. In advanced climes, grievances and political differences are put aside immediately after elections, and cohesion is thereafter ensured to bring all parties together with the sole aim of uplifting their economy.
Sadly, it is a different ball game in this part of the world where backbiting and continuous pulling down is the day’s order, Opposition back here believes they cannot remain relevant in the society if they do not do everything necessary to distract the government in power with their unfounded criticism and bias. In Edo State, the situation is precarious. I have overtime watched the continuous show of shame put up by Chief Dan Orbih and some selected embryos of the PDP publicly displaying their ignorance and political ineptitude as a way of getting back to the executive governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for unprecedentedly disorganizing their ranks in the state five years ago.
Often times, I can’t but ask my self why these crops of selfish elements still want to be relevant in our society when they unpardonably collapsed the economic structures of the state in their ten years of holding on to power with nothing but rapid diminution as their achievement for the long stay in government. If we must have people that will fight our course as Edo People, it certainly cannot be Chief Orbih and his cronies in the PDP who are the chief initiators of the rot and decay that Oshiomhole is trying so hard to clean up. The recent interview granted to Chief Orbih concerning the planned sale of Edo House in Lagos is not only laughable but also downgrading of a man of his caliber watched disgustingly on one of the indigenous television stations some days back how Chief Orbih childishly carried a placard and chanting a song of solidarity that he ordinarily could not recite properly, to protest the proposed move of the government.
Even though we appreciate the existence of a deteriorating magnificent structure in Lagos as our inheritance from the defunct Bendel State, the Ironic question is: How many Edo indigenes are directly or indirectly benefiting from such a building especially when it has since outlived its purpose of being built so many years ago? As an Edo indigene and stakeholder of the state, I see no reason why we must keep holding on to such a gigantic structure which will continue to drain the state’s scarce resources in the midst of daunting economic challenges. If a section of the public is mesmerized by the enormous look of the structure on television and pages of news papers, I believe it will be more productive when such an edifice is built back here which every Edo Son and daughter will be proud to see with their two eyes and not some television recording of a ghost structure. I am of the strong opinion that economic issues must not be politicized if we must see the change that we constantly yearn for. Does it make any economic sense to hold on to a property that costs the government a whopping sum of N60 Million taxpayers’ money to continually service its existence when the government does not even get up to that as turnover from the so-called State Property”?
The state government in its wisdom has also thought it wise to dispose off the building owing to the fact that the capital of Nigeria has since been moved from Lagos to Abuja where a better and more Sophisticated Edo House has been erected for diplomatic purposes. What Edo people should be concerned about is whether the proceeds from the sales will be deployed to productive channels to uplift the economy of the state and not to be swayed by the opinions of some retrogressive politicians who are still in shock over their unbelievable defeat at the polls. The Comrade Governor has proven to be an accountable office holder which is the reason why there are visible developments on ground, unlike the dark and unproductive years of the PDP in the state. I suggest we rally round the present administration in the state because of its commitment and determination in tackling the numerous challenges that abound.
God bless Edo State.

FG committed to boosting local production, job creation – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said that his administration will continue to promote the rapid diversification and industrialization of the Nigerian economy in order to create more employment opportunities in the country.
He made this remark while receiving a delegation from Alstom Worldwide which won the bid for the Afam Power Plant at the State House, Abuja. The delegation was led by Mr. Patrick Kron.
The President stressed that the Federal Government will also continue to do its best to encourage investors who will support its efforts towards creating more jobs for qualified Nigerian youth.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President said: “The population of our young people is high. If we are unable to provide jobs for these young people, the country could face serious problems. That is why we will continue to encourage companies like yours which can contribute to the training and employment of young Nigerians,”
Reaffirming his administration’s full commitment to the efficient implementation of its road-map for the development of Nigeria’s power sector, he said that government will continue to ensure that international best practices and standards were maintained in the ongoing privatization of the sector’s assets.
Jonathan said that he was particularly pleased that the recent bidding for some of Nigeria’s power generation and distribution companies had been considered transparent and fair by the international business community.
He said: “We will continue to do more in line with globally-accepted business standards and ethics.”
Mr. Kron, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Alstom, told President Jonathan that Alstom which is one of the world’s leading power engineering and infrastructure companies, will work with the Federal Government and the French Government on capacity-building schemes to train more Nigerian youth in the field of power engineering and technology.
He was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jacques Champagne de Labriolle and the Managing Director of Alstom (Nigeria) Limited, Mrs. Victoria Adefala.

Father of slain Nigerian student wants justice

President Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to intervene in the shoddy handling of the death of a Nigerian student in Cyprus, Gabriel Peremiyentei Soriwei.
The father of the deceased, Comrade Soriwei Patrick Dubamini, said his 20- year old son, a student of Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the Cyprus International University, (CIU), Nikosia in the Republic of Cyprus died following the injury he sustained when he was knocked down by a car driven by an unnamed Turkish woman.
In an open letter to the President, Comrade Soriwei, said instead of prosecuting the driver who was allegedly drunk when the accident happened, the Turkish police has shielded her and insisted that she lost control of the car.
“On July 13, 2013, I received a call from the agent who facilitated his admission processes at 9:30pm that my son was knocked down by a vehicle and was in a coma in Cyprus. Immediately I arranged a trip to Nikosia, North Cyprus the following week and met my son on admission in the intensive care unit of the Nikosia General Hospital. By their rules, I was given a five minutes access to the unconscious boy on Mondays and Thursdays.
“I went with The President of the Foreign Students in Nikosia to the police station to know how the matter was handled and see the lady who drove the vehicle that knocked him down. But from all indications, the police built a web of protection around the Turkish Woman,” Soriwei added.
The father of the deceased said it was unfortunate that the university flew the body of his son to the country on September, 12 in a most traumatic manner “as a cargo” without his belongings.
“The Leadership of the CIU did not find it expedient to send representatives from the school neither did they write any condolence letter to my agonizing family. Almost a month after his death, the lady who killed my son has not found it weighty enough to call the grieving Soriwei family to commiserate with us,” he said.
Comrade Soriwei urged President Jonathan to intervene in the matter to prevent a reoccurrence of “such injustice in the future.”

Kidnappers of Oronto Douglas's sister want N500m ransom

Abductors of Auguster Douglas-Ayam, the sister to the Presidential Adviser on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Oronto Douglas, broke their silence on Thursday morning.
They were said to have contacted the husband of their victim and demanded N500 million ransom to free the 48-year old woman.
Douglas-Ayam was seized and whisked away to an unknown area in the creeks by nine gunmen who wore army uniforms.
The assailants that operated on a black speedboat abducted her at the Ogbia waterside at about 8.45pm on Monday after shooting into the air.
But after keeping mum for four days, the kidnappers contacted the woman’s husband at about 2am on Thursday and asked for a whooping N500 million.
A source from the family said the call was brief and straight to the point.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said efforts by the family to contact the kidnappers again through the number proved abortive.
But he said the kidnappers allowed the husband to speak to the wife.
He said: “The kidnappers said the money should be given to them on or before Friday this week otherwise they will kill our sister and drop her corpse where we will pick it.
“We tried to call the number they used in calling the husband but it did not go through. The amount they asked for is outrageous. Where do they expect us to get that kind of money?
“We know they are in business but this particular demand is not reasonable. The kind of money they asked for could only be gotten from the Central Bank or from the treasury. We asked them to make their demand reasonable but they angrily cut off the phone.
“We could hear our sister crying at the background. She was sick before she was kidnapped. This is very painful. We are still waiting for their call. We appeal to them to release our sister. We don’t have such money.”
A top security source also confirmed that the kidnappers demanded the ransom but said it would surely be negotiated downwards.
He said security operatives were monitoring the situation with care because of its delicate nature.
“The kidnappers should have a rethink and release the woman because no matter what they do, we will get them,” he said.

Odimegwu resigns as NPC Chairman

*Nwabueze replaced on Dialogue Committee

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Festus Odimegwu has resigned his appointment from the Commission.
The Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso had few weeks back demanded the sack of Odimegwu for allegedly criticizing the works of his predecessor.
Kwankwaso had claimed that Odimegwu was incapable of conducting the 2016 national census.
The Federal Government then had issued Odimegwu query to explain the reasons behind his utterances.
But a statement issued Thursday  by the Special Assistant (media) to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sam Nwaobasi said that President Goodluck Jonathan has already accepted the resignation.
The statement reads: “His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR has accepted the resignation of Eze Festus Odimegwu as Chairman of the National Population Commission with effect from Thursday, 17th of October, 2013.”
“Dr. Sam Ahaiwe, the Commissioner representing Abia State in the Commission, will act as chairman pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman.”
It also disclosed that President Jonathan has approved the appointment of Prof. Anya. O. Anya, as a member of the Advisory Committee on National Dialogue to replace Prof. Ben Nwabueze, who is still abroad on health grounds.
Mr. Pius Olakunle Osunyikanmi was also appointed yesterday as Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Technical Aids Corps.

Aviation Enemies, Bullet Proof Cars, And Stella Oduah’s Stupidity

By Wale Odunsi
The stench of arrogance, lies, deceit and corruption in the government of President Goodluck Jonathan oozes that no amount of image-laundering cologne will cure. Loyalists and aides never forget to remind us that Mr. Jonathan is a good man, a gentleman, a respecter of rule of law, God-sent leader, bla bla. But why would a man with such wonderful attributes that would make Basir Al-Assad commit suicide, continue to flirt around terrible individuals? Do I perceive a case of rewarding undiluted loyalty or unequaled friendship?I am very amazed.
In those days, questionable characters in whatever arm of government possess a bit of decorum. Many of them, albeit renowned brigands stole with a measure of sympathy. They looted in a way only their family members, concubines, close staff and associates found out. The masses were kept in the dark, at least most of the time. Fast forward to 2013, all sectors, including the ever-green GRAFT, have undergone huge transformation, robust growth and tremendous development, which are visible to every Nigerian at home and in the Diaspora.
Not-minding the earlier crashes and near-crashes witnessed under her tenure, the country’s Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi, thought it wise or was (wrongly) advised to forestall any fatality by muzzling out a personal security vote from parastatals saddled with the responsibility of ensuring both personal security and collective safety of millions of travelers flying the nation’s airspace! More appalling, is the fact that the latest scandal for which she has been indicted occurred only a month before the recent Associated Airlines accident that killed, sorry, re-killed a former governor and 14 others.
That our oyinbo-accent sister, daughter, wife and mother, needs more protection than her boss, President Jonathan, is not in any way an acceptable argument; that one requires two cars worth $1.6m (N255 million) to effectively discharge official duties is ridiculous; that a government official finds it not abnormal to order agencies under her watch to cough out a quarter of a billion is shameful; that we had to hear the gist from the media further shows the level of insecurity and cover-up in governance; that the accused is still comfortable being the occupier of the office is a confirmation that integrity is no longer a watchword for service; that the President may not find this scandal enough reason to give the Minister the boot is even ridiculous and is paining me to the marrow!
Justifying the purchase, Joe Obi, the Minister’s media assistant, stated that his principal inherited a lot of baggage in terms of the terms of concessions and lease agreements which were not in the interest of the government and people of Nigeria. To this end, according to him, adequate security cannot be handled with kid gloves. I ask: Why did it take more than two years after her swearing-in (July 2, 2011) to realize the urgency of self-protection from “imminent threat”?
For Ms. Oduah's information, it is not only her ministry supposed enemies of the state are targeting. The Ministries of Finance and Agriculture are also on the radar of the bad guys; probably under more threat when compared to hers. She must be stupid to think that her confirmation that she requested the purchase of the automobiles portray her as sincere person. No ma’m, there is absolutely nothing to explain; records, receipts, documents and statements from aggrieved personnel gave you away already.
Federal Government freaks out when opposition leaders, organized Labour, commentators and activists applaud the Academic Staff of Universities Union (ASUU) for sustaining the ongoing action. But from the picture its reckless officials paint, isn’t it clear that contrary to the “we cannot afford your demands” claim, the country can in fact fulfill the contentious 2009 agreement? The striking lecturers are no idiots; they see, hear and read about the countless financial mismanagement and wastage by the same people who claim no money!
In their tiny brain of illusion, our leaders think that they are smooth, sleek and smart. The sad part, however, is that a number of them are not only fools, but are living in fools’ paradise yet they know not. I mean if they are as brilliant as on paper, how is it possible that less-educated people catch them by the wrist? How is it possible that despite diversionary tactics, their secrets blow open eventually?
Ms. Oduah was bold to single-handedly spend N255million of our collective wealth in a frivolous manner and then say it is for the use of the establishment. Going by the outcry trailing the purchase, what if her successor decides to do without the “utility vehicles”? In a clime where voodooism is still in high practice, the next Minister could reject the cars for fear that Ms. Oduah’s traducers have cast a spell on the fortified BMW 760s.
As we’ve all seen, heavy cosmetic make-up can only cover the spots, blemishes and wrinkles our faces, it does not (and will never) do the magic on dishonesty, crass attitude, shady deals and corrupt tendencies. The President will do himself, his government and the nation a world of good by dropping this woman from his cabinet. I am counting on the hope that he will do this without further delay. I would not bet on it though.
