Strong indications emerged yesterday that the People’s
Democratic Party, (PDP) may substitute the name of Prince Nicholas
Ukachukwu with that of a compromise governorship candidate for
the November 16 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, to free the
party from litigations.
A source within the National Working Committee, (NWC) of PDP told Daily Sun that
the party might have resolved to select a compromise governorship
candidate from Anambra North senatorial zone with a view to wriggling
itself out of the divisive and time wasting litigations in court.
“The party was moved by the divisive impact of the litigations in
court and the fact that the election was just six weeks away, to
sideline the three claimants, Senator Andy Uba, Prince Ukachukwu and
Nwoye; to settle for a less controversial candidate from Anambra north
senatorial zone to fly the party’s flag,”
However, in a swift reaction, the PDP National Publicity secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh said it is not true. He told Daily Sun
in a telephone interview yesterday that “there is no request for it
(substitution). There is no need for it. There is no discussion over it
and the idea is not even being entertained”.
Though the revealed that the name of the lucky candidate was being
kept under wraps because of the sensitize nature of the arrangement, he
said “as we speak, the NWC has finalized plans to send the name of the
compromise governorship candidate to the Independent National Electoral
Commission, (INEC) any moment from now to substitute the name of Prince
Nicholas Ukachukwu. Last week Friday, (October 4, 2013) after going
through the relevant laws, the NWC discovered that it has permission to
substitute the candidate outside the three claimants in current
litigation”
He said PDP NWC decided to act fast to ensure that party faithful and
voters do not hurry to rival political parties stressing that “when the
name of the candidate is announced, it would inject a new twist that
would change the calculations of the governorship poll considering that
the candidate is coming from Anambra North senatorial zone”.
