The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has
expressed its displeasure over the continued waste of public funds by
some government officials, particularly, Commissioners and aides to
Governor Rotimi Amaechi, calling on anti-graft agents to urgently check
the ugly trend and save the state a possible irreversible damage.
The
PDP came out with this position while reacting to the report of the
arrest of a security aide to the Rivers State Commissioner of
Agriculture, Hon. Emmanuel Chinda in connection with the missing One
Million Naira (N1m) belonging to the Commissioner.
According to
the Party, information has it that the State Commissioner of
Agriculture, Hon. Emma Chinda has arrested his security man for
allegedly stealing the said N1m from his house. The security man is
presently being detained at the Ada George Police Station in Port
Harcourt.
In view of the damaging effects on the most needed
development in the state, and for the fact that it is tax payers’ money
that is being squandered by these public officers, the Peoples
Democratic party therefore wants the security agencies, particularly,
the Police, the EFCC, and the ICPC to swiftly investigate the
Commissioner to ascertain the source of the huge funds kept in his house
from which the security man stole only N1m.
The statement signed
by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, also
notes with dismay the manner at which Amaechi’s aides have continued to
live above their means, which has clearly demonstrated that they are
corrupt, busy using tax payers’ money meant for the development of the
State for their personal and domestic needs.
“It is our belief
that if things are done appropriately, especially using the State’s
funds for the actual development and empowerment of our people in the
State, the level of poverty in the land would be greatly reduced. It is
therefore our pains that officials of our State, Rivers, under governor
Amaechi, have relentlessly shown outright disregard for prudence and
accountability in governance, the consequences of which we are faced
with cries of woes and anguish by our people for lack of good roads,
shelter, and other basic amenities which ought to have been provided by
government”, PDP noted, adding that “this ought to be a PDP government,
and we must not see what is wrong and keep a sealed lip to avoid being
blamed for what we strongly abhor”.
