Plateau Speaker Resigns, Deputy Impeached As Assembly Gets First Female Deputy Speaker

The speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr. John Clark, on Wednesday resigned his position as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
The new Speaker, Mr. Titus Alarms, is also from the same Plateau Central Senatorial District.
Reports say Mr. Clark had resigned to forestall his impeachment as fellow lawmakers had put pressure on him to resign or be impeached.
The deputy speaker, Mr. John-bull Shekaru, who represents Shendam constituency, was not so lucky as he was impeached by the lawmakers after he refused to resign.
Mr. Shekaru’s impeachment was supported by 17 of the 24 members of the Assembly while 5 voted against it.
A new deputy speaker, Mrs. Joyce Rapnap, representing Langtang South, was elected.
Despite attempts by some members to intervene, majority of the lawmakers, insisted both the speaker and deputy must vacate their office accusing them of being too weak and very close to the executive.
The new leaders have already been were sworn-in.
