ARMED robbers Tuesday shot dead three policemen and injured one in Lagos State.
The robbers were said to be operating on two motorcycles popularly known as okada when they spotted a police patrol vehicle on routine duty and rained bullets on it, killing three policemen and injuring one.
One of the policemen was said to have fired at one of the robbers who also died instantly.
It
was gathered that the policemen attached to Area ‘C’ Command, Surulere,
were deceived by the robbers in caftan thinking that they were
responsible persons until they opened fire on them.
A police
source at Ijora Olopa area where the incident occurred, said one
pump-action gun fully loaded was recovered at the scene, while the
bodies of the slain robbers and the policemen were taken to the
mortuary.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Alhaji
Umar Manko, who confirmed the story, said the police were in a patrol
vehicle and were shot from behind by the robbers.
Manko said the
suspects who were three in one motorcycle, dressed in caftan, took
advantage of the rainfall and shot them while on their legitimate
duty around Ijora-Olopa.
“My men were ambushed by the robbers. But
I can assure you that I would get them and make them face the wrath of
the law,” he said.
According to him, the policemen were five
inside the patrol vehicle when the incident occurred. He said three
policemen were killed; one was injured while the driver was unhurt.
Manko said he could not immediately give all the detail of how it happened.
He
said that the policemen were attached to Area ‘C’ Police Command
Surulere, adding that investigation has commenced as he has ordered the
officer in charge of the State Anti-Robbery (SARS), Abba Kyari, to
fish-out the suspected armed robbers.
